The framework of this exhibition is inspired by the omnipresent gestures of a dancer drawing a provisional space on stage through movement. Support and Gesture aims to gain insight into the work of the two artists based on the physical and temporal principles of a dancer who creates compositions of lines and planes at every moment. Through the system of dance notation, which has been used to reproduce more concrete and multidimensional movements, we examine Lim Chaehong's paper-folding methodology, and look into the logic of painting-sculpture constructed by Shin Jongchan through a series of processes and performances in which a dancer trains their own body.

Using hanji as his primary material, Lim Chaehong focuses on the vibrant painterly possibilities based on material experiments. The motility accompanying the paper's repeated relaxation and contraction as water and pigment permeate the hanji, the potential spatiality entailed in the process of folding and unfolding the paper, and the multifaceted nature of the paper witnessed while traversing its front and back—what the artist explores lies in shedding or raising a part of the flat surface's nature. Furthermore, the paper-folding instructions the artist follows or disregards to reproduce a certain form closely resemble the format of directions a choreographer gives to a dancer.

The acts of a dancer bending and stretching their arms, roaming the stage, and coming to a halt also play a part in evoking the environment there. Just as bodily movement becomes a clue to reconsider the specifications and shape of the stage space, Lim Chaehong experiences the spatialization of appearance and disappearance during the time of the action of folding and unfolding the site called 'paper.' The flat surface Lim ultimately unfolds accumulates numerous intertwined trajectories. Holding the paper in hand and crumpling it into a ball, or in the thin, recessed wrinkles between the planes folded neatly and then unfolded, a 'floor pattern' painted in a deeper concentration remains. It is like a document in which movement is written from a multidimensional perspective.

The exhibition peruses the geometric documents of the two artists where 'movement is written' and who 'wrote the movement.' Just as a dancer simultaneously unfolds the time and space they operate on stage during a performance, the two artists describe the flow of movement in detail by structuring actions along vertical and horizontal lines. In Agamben's terms, dance is a state of 'whatever.' The five elements of movement—Body, Action, Space, Effort, and Shape—hold the potential to be organized with anything, the latency to enable various types of performance. Undoubtedly, the intimacy of materials that do not hide themselves and the subtle sounds emitted by individual movements resonate quietly everywhere in the exhibition. By linking the works of the two artists, we hope to find clues that will open up diverse possibilities of formative styles.
